Installation instructions for the AIC-7870 Windows 95 driver:
--------------------------------------------------------------

This readme provides the information needed to install and use the Adaptec
7800 Family Manager (driver) for Windows 95.

If you are performing a first time Windows 95 installation, see Installing
Windows 95 and the Driver. If Windows 95 is already installed in your system,
see Updating Windows 95 with the Driver.

NOTE: When Windows 95 starts, if a "New Hardware Found" dialog is displayed
after installing your 7800 Family host adapter, please select "Driver from
disk provided by hardware manufacturer." Then insert your AS2940UW CD to
CD-ROM and type D:\win95 as the path. Follow the succeeding on-screen
     instructions.

Installing Windows 95 and the Driver
====================================

A version of the aic78xx.mpd driver is embedded (included) in the Windows 95
installation CD. This driver does NOT support the FAST20 line of PCI SCSI host
adapters, such as the AHA-2940U, AHA-2940UW, AHA-2940AU, AHA-3940U etc. If you
have a member of the FAST20 line of PCI SCSI host adapters, you must follow the
instructions listed under Updating Windows 95 with the Driver, below.

Other (non-FAST20) members of the 7800 Family of host adapters are detected
in your system and the embedded aic78xx.mpd driver is automatically installed.
Once the Windows 95 installation is complete, you can update the aic78xx.mpd
driver with the most recent version of the driver by following the instructions
in Updating Windows 95 with the Driver, below.

Updating Windows 95 with the Driver
====================================

This section describes how to update/install the aic78xx.mpd driver if
Windows 95 is already installed. If you are installing Windows 95 for the
first time, see Installing Windows 95 and the Driver, above.

Note: All Adaptec 7800 Family host adapters use the same aic78xx.mpd driver.
Once the driver is updated, it is not necessary to update it again for each
7800 Family host adapter installed in your system.

    1 Start Windows 95.

2 Click the Start button on the Windows 95 task bar, and then point to
      Settings.

    3 Click Control Panel.

    4 Double-click the System icon.

5 On the Device Manager tab, double-click on the SCSI Controllers icon.

NOTE: If your adapter is not listed, there is no SCSI Controllers icon,
or there is an Other Devices icon under the Device Manager, double-click
on the Other Devices icon. If you see something similar to "PCI SCSI Bus
Controller" listed, you must update the driver for this device. Continue
        with step 6.

6 Double-click the 7800 Family host adapter you wish to update, or if a
yellow question mark labeled "PCI SCSI Bus Controller" is displayed under
the Other Devices icon, double-click on the question mark.

7 On the Driver tab, click Change Driver. You may be asked to select
the hardware type; if asked to do so, select SCSI Controller.

8 Click the Have Disk button and enter D:\win95 as the location to
      copy the manufacturer's file from.

    9 Click OK.

10 Select your 7800 Family host adapter, and click OK.

11 Click OK. The driver is copied and scanned.

12 You must restart your computer for the changes to take effect. Click
Yes to restart your computer. Click No to return to the system
       properties window.

Fast20 Host Adapters
====================
A version of the aic78xx.mpd driver is embedded (included) in the Windows 95
installation CD. This driver does NOT support Fast20 Host Adapters such as the
AHA-2940AU, AHA-3940U, AHA-3940UW, etc. When Windows 95 cannot determine the type
of host adapter installed in your computer, a yellow question mark labeled Other
Devices appears instead of the SCSI controller icon. You must update each adapter
listed under Other Devices. See Updating Windows 95 with the Driver, above, for
each yellow question mark labeled under Other Devices.

To make sure your AS2940UW CD drivers are properly installed and
operating under Windows 95, please do the following:

1 Open the Control Panel, double-click on System, and click on the Device Manager
      tab.

2 Double-click on the SCSI Controllers icon; you should see your 7800 Family
      Manager Host Adapter listed.

3 If your adapter is not listed, there is no SCSI Controllers icon,
or there is an Other Devices icon under the Device Manager, double-click
on the Other Devices icon. If you see something similar to "PCI SCSI Bus
Controller" listed, you must update the driver for this device. Follow the
instructions listed under Updating Windows 95 with the Driver.

4 If there is a yellow exclamation point or red X in front of the 7800 Family
Manager Host Adapter, double-click on the icon to see the error message.

Note: Due to an inherent Windows 95 bug, each channel of the AHA-3940U and
AHA-3940UW must be updated/installed manually with the aic78xx.mpd driver on a
freshly installed Windows 95 system. Please follow the instructions listed under
Updating Windows 95 with the Driver.
