Installation Guide

  Getting Started

The Samsung WideDisk uses a setup program to make the driver installation quick
and easy.
Most computers are sold with an HDD pre-installed. However if your computer did
not come with an HDD, you must carefully install your drive now.

1. Insert your bootable diskette into drive A: and boot your computer.

2. Insert the Samsung WideDisk installation diskette into drive A:. Execute the
WideDisk program by typing 'WIDEDISK' at the command line, and pressing
   Enter key.

    A:>WideDisk

The WideDisk program detects the type of HDD and DOS version of your computer.
If your configuration does not meet the requirements, WideDisk will not install.
If your configuration not match the reported configuration, please check the HDD
cabling and the BIOS fixed disk setup.

3. The following menu will appear

     Automatic Disk Installation
     Custom Disk Installation
     About This Product
     Exit to DOS

NOTES : The arrow keys move the menu bar and pressing Enter key execute the
selected menu item. If you want to see more detailed instruction,
press F1 key at any time.

    Automatic Disk Installation

The Automatic Disk Installation option make it easy to install the boot driver.
WideDisk automatically creates a single DOS partition using the full capacity of
the HDD, formats the drive and installs the DOS system files. Simply follow the
prompts provided on screen.

If your computer has two IDE drives, you must select the drive onto which files
will be copied.

NOTES : If your computer has two IDE drives, but one is less than528MB,
the Master/Slave selection menu not be visible.

BACK UP YOUR DATA ! THIS OPTION DESTROYS ALL DATA STORED ON DRIVE.

    Custom Disk Installation

The Custom Disk Installation installs a driver for advanced users only. To
install DOS , manually create a DOS partition. If using two IDE drives, you
must select which drive to install the utility to. Onscreen prompts will
provide direction.

    About This Product

See WideDisk program introduction.

    Exit to DOS

Exit to DOS terminates the setup program, and exits to DOS. If you have installed
the driver, the system reboots.

Advanced User's Installation Guide

1. Execute WIDEDISK.EXE program. To install the driver, select "Automatic Disk
Installation" and press Enter. The installation utility will install the boot driver
program. Skip the DOS installation procedure.

2. Remove the floppy disk in drive A, and re-boot your computer. The driver
software will load and display the banner message, as well as the "3 seconds
to boot" message. At this time, and before the 3 seconds have elapsed, insert
a DOS bootable diskette in drive A. The computer will boot from the floppy.
Make sure that the MS-DOS utilities FDISK and FORMAT are on the floppy disk. At
the DOS prompt, type FDISK, and proceed with partitioning the drive as desired.
After partitioning, the FDISK utility automatically reboots the computer.
Remove the floppy disk from drive a before the computer actually boots, and
allow the boot to occur from the hard drive. The driver software will load and
display the banner message, as well as the "3 seconds to boot message." Again
at this time, and before the 3 seconds have elapsed, insert a DOS bootable
diskette in drive A. The computer will boot from the floppy. At the DOS prompt,
use the FORMAT program to format the new HDD drive and install the MS-DOS
operating system. After formatting is complete, remove the floppy disk and
re-boot your computer. Allow the boot driver to count down the 3 seconds, do not
insert the floppy disk into the floppy drive; the computer will boot from hard
drive.

3. Install any DOS application program and run it.

Floppy Disk Booting Guide

To boot from floppy drive, use the following step

1. Remove the floppy disk in drive A.
2. Re-boot your computer.
3. The boot driver software will load and display the banner message.

FOR FLOPPY BOOT, PRESS SPACE BAR [BOOTING COUNT DOWN : 3]

4. Press the space bar to boot from floppy.
5. Insert bootable diskette in drive A.
6. Press any key.

Windows 32Bit Disk Access Installation

If you want to enable Windows 32Bit Disk Access enable, you should use SHDRV.386
Windows VxD(virtual device driver). To install the SHDRV.386, run 'INSTALL.EXE'
under windows environment. This program will check if WideDisk boot driver was
installed. If there is a problem in installing SHDRV.386 although WideDisk boot
driver was installed, then run INSTALL.EXE with option /B as following ;

             INSTALL /B

INSTALL will modify SYSTEM.INI and the original SYSTEM.INI file will be stored
in a backup file called SYSTEM.SHD.

TROUBLESHOOTING

1. The amount of conventional memory is reduced.

Because WideDisk driver program uses the 3KB conventional memory area, the
amount of available memory will be reduced.

2. You have a doubt about virus.

Some virus detection programs report the possibility of infection if the amount
of memory is not 640KB, but it is a mistake of the virus detection programs.
The WideDisk driver program uses 3KB of the 640KBs of conventional memory.

3. Enabling 32-bit disk access option in Windows 3.1

When WideDisk driver program is installed to make use of a HDD larger than
528MB, the 32Bit Disk Access option in windows 3.1 does not work, because of
the WideDisk driver intercepts the fixed disk ROM BIOS and use it. Therefore,
in order to use the windows 32Bit Disk Access, install SHDRV.386.
To install SHDRV.386, see Windows 32Bit Disk Access installation.

4. Failure in installing WideDisk program.

If the HDD is a non-IDE type or is smaller than 528MB, the WideDisk driver is
not needed. Please check the HDD cable connection and ROM BIOS fixed disk setup
if used IDE HDD over 528MB.

5. Boot from floppy disk., can't find drive C:

To correct this problem, See Floppy Disk Booting Guide.

6. When bad sectors occur while using system.

Because WideDisk doesn't scan defect areas on the drive when it installs DOS,
you may find bad sectors under DOS if the drive has defect sectors.

To prevent the problems, It is highly recommend to scan the drive defect sectors
using defect scan program such as Norton Disk Doctor or DOS scandisk after
installing DOS with WideDisk.

7. When do you use WideDisk device driver?

WIDEDISK.SYS is a DOS device driver which supports over 528MB. If you have a
IDE HDD which was instakked with WideDisk driver as a slave, and if you want to
move the HDD to another system as a slave, but you do not want to install the
boot driver, then use WideDisk device driver. To install WideDisk device driver,
copy WIDEDISK.SYS file to hard disk C:\, and change the CONFIG.SYS file by
adding a line for the WideDisk device driver.

  DEVICE=C:\WIDEDISK.SYS [/Option]

  WideDisk Device Driver Options

/S : Device driver handles slave drive
/M : Device driver handles master drive

8. Install WideDisk driver in Enhanced BIOS PCs

Some PCs has Enhanced BIOS which support over 528MB. WideDisk is not needed in
these systems.

9. Using other IDE HDD device drivers.

Other vendors IDE HDD device drivers may conflict with WideDisk driver because
of compatibility reason.
To avoid WideDisk driver conflict, do not use other IDE HDD device drivers.

10. Removing WideDisk boot driver.

To remove WideDisk boot driver, Use wdremove.exe program. FDISK or FORMAT
program won't be able to remove WideDisk boot driver. You must use wdremove.exe
program to remove WideDisk boot driver.
