Build and Installation Notes for Toshiba Windows NT Utilities.
=============================================================================

Overview:
=========

The Toshiba Windows NT Utilities diskette contains drivers which enable the
user to run the MaxTime and Hardware Setup utilities on their Toshiba T3600
computers running Windows NT. To ensure proper installation of these
drivers, please follow the directions found in this file.

Diskette Contents:
==================

The installation diskette should contain the following files:

    o MSCOMSTF.DLL - DLL required by Setup program.
    o MSCUISTF.DLL - DLL required by Setup program.
    o MSDETSTF.DLL - DLL required by Setup program.
    o MSINSSTF.DLL - DLL required by Setup program.
    o MSSHLSTF.DLL - DLL required by Setup program.
    o MSUILSTF.DLL - DLL required by Setup program.
    o   README.TXT          - This file.
    o   SCI.DL_             - Compressed SCI DLL file.
    o   SCIDRV.SY_          - Compressed SCI Driver file.
    o   SCIVDD.DL_          - Compressed SCI VDD file.
    o   SETUP.EXE           - Setup and Installation program.
    o SETUP.INF - Setup INF file required by Setup program.

Setup and Installation:
=======================

To properly install the Toshiba Windows NT drivers, place the diskette in
your floppy drive, go to the "File" menu under Windows NT's File Manager and
select the "Run..." option. At the dialog prompt, enter "A:\SETUP.EXE",
assuming you placed the diskette in drive A. If you placed the diskette
in any other drive, you must specify that drive instead of A. Select the
"OK" button and follow the directions given by the Setup program.

Troubleshooting:
================

Problem: Setup fails to install some or all of the driver files:

    Cause #1: Out of disk space.
    Solution: Free up some disk space and re-run Setup.

    Cause #2: Can't overwrite previously installed driver file.
    Solution: Locate the installed driver file on your hard disk
		and rename it. You will not be able to delete it. Then
		re-run Setup.

Problem: You've installed the drivers, but utilities still do not work.

    Cause #1: Windows NT has not been properly restarted.
    Solution: Shutdown Windows NT and restart it. Don't just log out.

    Cause #2: The drivers were not properly installed.
    Solution: Try re-installing the drivers and restart Windows NT. If
		problem still persists, contact Toshiba Support.

Problem: You had Setup create a Startup item, but did not get one.

    Cause #1: It's possible you deleted the Startup folder.
    Solution: Create a Startup folder, then you can either place a program
		item for MaxTime within the folder, or re-run the Setup
		program.

    Cause #2: Setup could not locate the MaxTime program on your hard disk.
    Solution: Make sure MAXTIME.EXE exists on the same drive as Windows NT.

Known Limitations & Aberrant Behaviors:
=======================================

All of the Toshiba Windows NT Utilities are 16 bit applications running under
Windows NT 32 bit operating system. Because of this fact, Windows NT must
emulate a 16 bit Windows environment. It does this through what is called a
VDM, or "Virtual DOS Machine". However, Windows NT's emulation is not 100%
perfect, and therefore certain idiosyncrasies may occur. The following is a
list of some of the known aberrant behaviors:

   REBOOTING:

      o Due to the high security levels imposed by the Windows NT operating
	 system, the MaxTime and Hardware Setup utilities are unable to
	 perform a system shutdown and reboot. Any attempt to shutdown the
	 system by these utilities results in the user being logged off, and
	 unpredictable effects will result if the user logs back in. This
	 is NOT a system shutdown and reboot, and simply logging back in will
	 not enable the features set by either utility. You MUST shutdown
	 and reboot the system. To do this, perform one of the following:

    A: To ensure proper shutdown, and to achieve proper hardware settings,
	 it is recommended that the user shutdown the system, and not let
	 the utility do it at all. This means that when prompted with a
	 reboot dialog from either utility, it is best to select "No", and
	 when ready, shutdown the system yourself.

				     OR:

    B: 1. When prompted by a utility to reboot, select "Yes". Doing
	       so will log you off. You will then be prompted with the
	       following login dialog box :

		     +-----------------------------------+

  Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to log on.

		     +-----------------------------------+

	     2. Press "Ctrl+Alt+Del" as though you were logging back in to
		the system.

	     3. You will then be prompted with the Welcome dialog box
		asking for your Username and Password. Do NOT log in !

	     4. Select the "Shutdown" button using the mouse, or use the
		hotkey equivalent ("Alt+S"). Once selected, choose "Shutdown
		and Restart" and select the "OK" button. This will shutdown
		Windows NT and reboot your computer.

	    IMPORTANT!!! Do not simply power off the computer at the login
	    prompt, as this still may cause strange effects when logging back
	    in to Windows NT due to NT's environment persistence.

   FN-ESSE:

      o Due to the way Fn-Esse creates and initializes its bitmaps and
	 graphic objects, its startup time is EXTREMELY SLOW... It takes
	 approximately 40 - 50 seconds for Fn-Esse to eventually display
	 its keyboard object. This can be confusing to the user since there
	 is no indication of application startup. Just be patient, for once
	 Fn-Esse has finally started, its behavior is very predictable and
	 consistent.
