2. More on installing and configuring 928Movie
----------------------------------------------

To install 928Movie:
- Use Windows Setup to set the Display Driver to VGA.
- Install the card.
- Run the 928Movie Setup program from DOS.

If your monitor is not in the Monitor Type list box in the 928Movie Display
window, please check the VideoLogic bulletin boards for an updated monitor
list. See page 35 of the 928Movie User Guide for details of our bulletin board
service.

If you accidentally select a display mode which is not supported by your
monitor it is possible that your display will become unreadable, making it
impossible to change back to a suitable mode. To correct this, exit Windows
(ALT+F4 a number of times followed by ENTER will often get you out of Windows,
otherwise you must use CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart your PC), then restart Windows
and hold down the CTRL key while Windows starts. This forces the 928Movie
driver to start in 640 x 480 graphics mode at 60 Hz, which is suitable for all
VGA monitors. Now you can use 928Movie Display to set the display mode you
want.

The 928Movie Setup program installs Video for Windows Runtime v1.1a and
Indeo 3.2 codec. SmoothScale is optimized for Video for Windows v1.1. If you
replace v1.1 with v1.0, then some .AVI files may not be accelerated. In this
case, choose the 928Movie VFW Re-Install icon in the 928Movie program group.

3. Upgrading from older versions
--------------------------------

The following points apply if you are overwriting an earlier version of the
928Movie software (e.g. v1.0.1 or v1.1):

- You do NOT need to configure Windows to run with the standard VGA display
driver if your display driver is set to 928Movie.

- You will have to select your monitor type again during setup, because new
modes and new monitors are available with this release.

- To preserve your 928Movie audio I/O base address, interrupt, and DMA
channel settings, use the /? switch to the 928Movie setup program (type
setup/? instead of setup at the DOS prompt).

- If you have been using MIDSWICH.EXE to demonstrate the acceleration and
interpolation provided by 928Movie, please note that this application
has been updated and is now called PPSWITCH.EXE.

4. 928Movie Tips
----------------

Video for Windows acceleration
------------------------------
928Movie uses the PowerPlay32 Digital Movie Accelerator (incorporating
SmoothScale) to scale up Video for Windows movies, enabling you to increase
the size of your movies without reducing their frame rate.

The SmoothScale scaling algorithm reduces the blocky effect caused by scaling
up Video for Windows. You can see its effect by playing a movie (larger than
its original size) with SmoothScale turned off, and then with SmoothScale
turned on. Use the Enable SmoothScale check box in the 928Movie Display
window to turn SmoothScale on and off.

How you increase the size of your AVI movies will vary from application to
application. In some cases you can enlarge the movie window by dragging its
border; in other cases you may need to use the commands or buttons provided
in your applications. For example, all movies with an .AVI extension launched
from File Manager or Program Manager will run under Microsoft's Media Player.
You can enlarge movies in Media Player by dragging the window border.
Alternatively, you can use the Configure command from the Devices menu to
run movies full screen or at twice their normal size.

Whatever application you use to play your movies, the following tips will
help you get the best performance from 928Movie.

- Wherever possible, use the 928Movie Display application to select a
display mode that uses 65 thousand colors or more. Applications that
recommend the use of 256 colors (8-bit graphics) usually play back just
as well, if not better, using 65 thousand colors (16-bit graphics).

- Avoid overlapping the video with other windows, as this may cause a
slight drop in the frame rate of the video.

Playing movies in 256 color modes
---------------------------------
If you are using a 256 color (8-bit) display mode, 928Movie only accelerates
movies recorded in 8-bit mode, or movies recorded in 16-bit Video 1, Indeo,
and Cinepak and displayed using the PowerPlay Full Screen driver. As
SmoothScale is not available in 256 color display modes, these accelerated
movies will always look blocky. We recommend that you use the 928Movie Display
application to choose a display mode that uses 65 thousand or 16.7 million
colors.

Using "Zoom by 2" from Media Player
-----------------------------------
Certain Video for Windows formats (e.g. Microsoft Video 1) provide special
support for "Zoom by 2" from within Media Player. Movies in these formats may
bypass the acceleration provided by 928Movie, and actually play worse when
zoomed to exactly twice their normal size. You can avoid this by making
the window slightly smaller or larger than exactly twice the default size.

5. The PowerPlay Full Screen driver
-----------------------------------

In addition to the 928Movie software documented in your User Guide, the
928Movie Setup program also installs the PowerPlay Full Screen driver. This
driver automatically enables you to use the scaling and acceleration
capabilities of 928Movie when you choose the Video for Windows Full Screen
option.

The PowerPlay Full Screen driver automatically plays the movie at 800 x 600
resolution unless you are in 640 x 480 mode when your movie will play at
640 x 480.

6. The VideoLogic EnergyStar screen saver
-----------------------------------------

During installation the 928Movie Setup program copies the VideoLogic
EnergyStar screen saver to the \Windows directory on your hard disk.
You can use this screen saver to switch VESA DPMS compliant monitors into
power saving modes.

   ------------------------------------------------------------
Caution: Check that your monitor is DPMS compliant before
using the VideoLogic EnergyStar screen saver. You can damage
non-compliant monitors by using them with this screen saver.
   ------------------------------------------------------------

The screen saver has three power saving modes: Standby, Suspend, Off.
The better the power saving the longer the recovery time (the time it
takes your monitor to show its picture again). Standby has the shortest
recovery time, and Off the longest.

To set up the VideoLogic EnergyStar screen saver:

- Choose Desktop from the Windows Control Panel.

- Select VideoLogic EnergyStar screen saver from the Name list box in
  the Screen Saver section.

- Use the Delay box to set the time you want to elapse before your
  monitor is switched to Standby.

- Choose the Setup button to display the VideoLogic EnergyStar Screen
  Saver dialog.

- Set the time you want to elapse before your display is switched to
Suspended, and the time you want to elapse before your display is
  switched Off.

7. Using PPSWITCH to demonstrate 928Movie
-----------------------------------------

To show the real benefit of 928Movie in terms of Video for Windows movie
acceleration, an application called PPSWITCH is installed in the 928Movie
Program Group.

When running, PPSWITCH gives you the ability to switch off SmoothScale and
movie acceleration in real-time, demonstrating the difference in movie
playback between running a normal Windows accelerator and running 928Movie.

Start the application, then double-click on the minimized PPSWITCH icon on
your desktop. A dialog box appears allowing you to define three hotkeys.
Define the hotkeys you want to use to demonstrate 928Movie.

   -----------------------------------------------------------------------
Caution: Any keys that you use as hotkeys in PPSWITCH are dedicated to
this application and are no longer available to other applications.
For example, setting hotkeys of '1', '2', and '3' means that if you are
writing a letter in Notepad or Write these keys no longer work.
   -----------------------------------------------------------------------

By pressing the keys, you can put 928Movie in one of three states:

movie acceleration and SmoothScale interpolation off
movie acceleration on, without SmoothScale interpolation
movie acceleration on, with SmoothScale interpolation

To demonstrate 928Movie:

- Press the first hotkey to disable acceleration completely.

- Start a Video for Windows movie using Media Player and increase its size to
at least double the default size. The movie will look very blocky, and the
frame rate will decrease, making it play erratically. This is what you see
with a normal Windows accelerator card.

- Press the second hotkey to enable movie playback acceleration. The movie
plays back at the same frame rate as it did at its default size.

- Press the third hotkey to enable SmoothScale. You will see the
blockiness of the stretched movie smoothed out to give a much clearer
  picture.

- You can continue to press the hotkeys to show the difference between
928Movie and a normal Windows accelerator.

When you close this application, movie acceleration and SmoothScale are
always automatically enabled.

8. Removing the 928Movie software
---------------------------------

The 928Movie software is easy to disable or remove, and can be taken out on

Note 1 (for problem listed above): Some VESA local bus PCs with UMC
motherboards use a UM82C4913 chip that has incorrect DMA timing. Many of
these PCs allow you to change the system (CMOS) settings to IBM-AT
compatible timings, as follows:

- for AMI BIOS PCs, press DEL during boot and go to the Advanced Chipset
Setup option. Find the 8-bit DMA wait state option and change it to 2
wait states. Save the settings. If there is no DMA wait state option
then follow the instructions for Award BIOS below.

- for Award BIOS, press DEL during boot and go to the Advanced Chipset
Setup option. Find the AT clock option and change it to CPUCLK/8. Save
   the settings.

11. Documentation Addendum
--------------------------

Display modes - The 1280 x 1024 at 50 Hz interlaced mode in the User Manual
is incorrect. This is actually 1280 x 1024 at 43 Hz
interlaced. This matches the 928Movie Display application.

Audio sample rates - 928Movie supports the following sample rates: 11.025 KHz,
		     22.05 KHz, and 44.1 KHz.
