11/20/96 Welcome to the MarkVision for UNIX Networks Demo FTP site. MarkVision for UNIX Networks is available for a variety of UNIX platforms. Installation procedures vary between System V and SunOS 4.1.x systems. Refer to the appropriate section below. For more information, refer to the MarkVision for UNIX Networks user guide. The user guide contains installation instructions for each platform. The user guide is available in both PostScript and Adobe Acrobat PDF formats in this directory. The user guide filenames are: mv_unixpub.pdf Adobe Acrobat PDF mv_unixpub.ps.Z PostScript (compressed) Download -------- The download package is a compressed tar file. Download the file in binary, then uncompress and untar the package. (Note: The SGI tar file is not compressed) System V Installation --------------------- MarkVision for UNIX Networks installs on System V machines using your operating system install utility. The MarkVision for UNIX Networks distribution is contained in a single file with a .pkg file extension on System V machines. You may need to uncompress and untar the downloaded file before installing. After downloading the appropriate install package for your system, use your system install utility to unpack the product. The following list outlines the install utility command for each platform, using 'markvision.pkg' as the package filename. Substitute your downloaded package filename in place of 'markvision.pkg.' OS Install Utility Command ------ ----------------------- AIX # smit install_latest HP-UX 9 # /etc/update HP-UX 10 # /usr/sbin/sam NCR # pkgadd -d markvison.pkg SGI # /usr/sbin/swmgr SCO # pkgadd -d markvision.pkg Solaris x86 # pkgadd -d markvision.pkg Solaris SPARC # pkgadd -d markvision.pkg UnixWare # pkgadd -d markvision.pkg Generally, you can uninstall packages using the same utility as you used to install. Exceptions are: HP-UX 9 uses '/etc/rmfn'; and systems that install using 'pkgadd' uninstall using 'pkgrm.' SunOS 4.1.x Installation ------------------------ Lexmark provides an install utility for SunOS 4.1.x (BSD) systems. You need to uncompress and untar the downloaded file before installing. The distribution contains an install script; the 'lexpkgadd' executable; and the package file. After downloading the appropriate install package for your system, use the provided install utility: 1 Run the install script. # ./install.markvision 2 Select the package you want to install. You can only select one package at a time. Once the package has been installed, you will be prompted to select any other packages. 3 Follow the instructions on the screen. Installed packages are shown with an asterisk (*) in the first column. Partially installed packages are shown with an exclamation mark (!) in the first column. NOTE If for some reason, the installation is interupted during or before the 'lexpkgadd' program is running, you can always run it from the command line. Ensure you are in the package directory and type: # ./lexpkgadd If you interupted the lexpkgadd install procedure and the package was partially installed, please DO NOT reinstall the package over the partial package. First, remove the partially installed package using the 'lexpkgrm' utility, then reinstall. AIX Installation ---------------- Use the AIX command "smit install_latest". On the installation screen set the "Commit software?" option to "No". This will allow the software to be easily uninstalled at the completion of the evaulation period. ---- Thank you for trying MarkVision for UNIX Networks!
