These drivers have been extensively tested in-house, and the server driver has completed Novell YES certification for NetWare 4.11 SMP. These updates offer improved EMM386 compatibility, and a new server driver for use with NetWare 4.11 SMP. You need only upgrade if you are using either of the DOS clients in conjunction with the Smart 16/4 AT, AT Plus or AT PnP Ringnodes or if you wish to use a Madge Smart 16/4 Ringnode in a NetWare 4.11 SMP server. SECTION 2: LSS 5.0 improvements and new features ================================================= New adapter card support ------------------------ This is the first release of LSS that supports the Smart 16/4 AT PnP Ringnode. Latest network operating system support --------------------------------------- This release provides drivers compatible with the latest versions of the common network operating systems and applications. Details of fixes included in this release are available in the Release Notes available from Madge. LSS 5.0 CD-ROM -------------- This is the first release of LSS to be distributed on CD-ROM. Going to this format allows the full range of driver support to be shipped with every new Smart Ringnode, and also allows a greater amount of technical data to be included. Floppy disks are provided for installation and configuration software and for installing the most popular drivers. The full set of LAN Support Software (LSS) included on the CD comprises: drivers utilities for installation, management and configuration full LSS User Documentation technical information on LSS software technical information on the full range of Smart Ringnodes Windows and DOS documentation browsers In addition to the LAN Support Software, the CD-ROM contains additional documentation on the range of Madge adapter card products and software releases for Madge Blue+ Adapters, for Madge ATM Collage Adapters, for Madge RingSwitches, and Token Ring drivers for UNIX systems. New Madge Wizard Graphical Installation Software ------------------------------------------------ LSS 5.0 includes a new integrated, graphical, DOS utility to simplify installation of products, especially for users who are unfamiliar with Madge Smart Ringnodes. Madge Wizard allows users to configure and test Ringnode hardware, to maintain DOS driver installations and to access all of the information and software on the CD-ROM. Support for new Network Operating Systems and environments ---------------------------------------------------------- LSS 5.0 contains support for the following new environments: Netware SMP (MADGEODI.LAN) Netware Client32 for Windows 95 and DOS (CMDGODI.LAN) Microsoft Windows NT v4.0 (MDGMPORT.SYS) IBM OS/2 Warp Server (MDGND.OS2) New OS/2 features ----------------- LSS 5.0 provides a number of enhancements for OS/2: Hot Swapping for PC Card Advanced Power Management IBM Netview DMI management support PnP enabler OS/2 adapter configuration utility Adapter identification utility for driver management Driver version identification utility New Windows NT features ----------------------- Added fault tolerance for servers - Windows NT server adapters can be configured to support Adapter Mirroring. This feature allows a second adapter to be used as a hot standby for the main adapter. If the first adapter looses it's connection to the ring for any reason, the standby adapter will take its place, adopting the first cards network address and maintining client connections. Windows NT Multiplatform Drivers - miniport drivers are available for MIPS, Alpha, PowerPC as well I386 platforms. Windows NT Multiplatform Diagnostics - adapter diagnostics utilities are provided for each of the supported hardware platforms. New Winsock & improved TCP/IP support ------------------------------------- LSS 5.0 has a Smart module to support Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) for use with TCP/IP. LSS 5.0 provides a Winsock interface as the standard API for TCP/IP on all Microsoft Windows based operating systems. This allows any vendor's WinSock 1.1 compliant TCP/IP applications to access other TCP/IP hosts. The TCP/IP suite in LSS 5.0 has been enhanced to increase performance on adapter cards with 512k memory. Desktop Management Interface (DMI) support ------------------------------------------ LSS 5.0 extends the Desktop Management Interface (DMI) support to include OS/2 in addition to the current support for DOS. DOS and OS/2 Hot Swapping for PCMCIA Ringnode (PC Card) ------------------------------------------------------- LSS 5.0 drivers include support for hot swapping of PCMCIA Ringnodes. Where supported by the operating system, this allows drivers to be unloaded and re-loaded automatically when a Ringnode is removed and re-inserted. DOS and OS/2 Advanced Power Management -------------------------------------- LSS 5.0 drivers are compliant with Advanced Power Management (APM) functions available with many of the current PCs. SECTION 3 LSS 5.0 upgrade notes ================================ The drivers and utilities in LSS 5.0 will not run on PCs using i8086 or i80286 processors. The DOS ODI driver (MADGEODI.COM) operating mode defaults have changed in this release. In certain operating environments, on Smart 16/4 AT and AT Plus Ringnodes, the DOS ODI driver would force the adapter to operate in PIO mode even if the hardware was configured for DMA mode. This was done to try and optimise performance automatically. To avoid confusion the LSS 5.0 DOS ODI driver uses the transfer mode that the card is configured to, unless there is a command line parameter to override it. The Fastmac drivers, SMARTND.DOS and SMARTND.OS2 have been superseded by the Fastmac Plus equivalent drivers, MDGND.DOS and MDGND.OS2. Fastmac is the name given to the software architecture used by Madge Smart Ringnode drivers which provides high data throughput. Fastmac Plus is an enhanced version of the software which enables even higher data throughput with minimal latency. The Windows NT 3.1 driver (SMARTNT.SYS) is no longer supported. The driver provided in LSS 5.0 (MDGMPORT.SYS) supports Windows NT 3.5 and later. SECTION 4 LSS 5.0 CD and disk structure ======================================= LSS 5.0 is distributed on a CD-ROM and two floppy disks. The CD-ROM structure can be browsed using the Madge Wizard utility provided on disk 1, however, note that the DIRECTOR.HTM files used by Madge Wizard to browse the CD-ROM can not be used by other HTML browsers.
